Rapids ties things up, heads to regular season

Grand Rapids, Minn. - The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks continued to tie exhibition games this weekend. On Friday, Grand Rapids tied Benilde-St. Margaret's, 2-2, in a two hour scrimmage. Matt How (So.) got the scoring started for Grand Rapids. AJ Merritt (Jr.) and Duston Schulte (Jr.) assisted on the goal. Sam Rendle (Sr.) added the final goal for Rapids. Tony Palkki (Sr.) picked up the lone assist. A.J. Underwood (Sr.) and Ryan Larsen (Jr.) split time in goal for Rapids. Each goalie let in one goal. The scrimmage included special teams time for both teams. Each team had roughly 15 minutes of power play and penalty kill. On Saturday, Grand Rapids hosted Holy Angels in a similar scrimmage. The two teams played to a 4-4 draw. Rendle got the scoring started for Grand Rapids. Palkki scored a power play goal assisted by Patrick Moore (So.) and John Skrbec (Jr.). Ryan Dumm (So.) scored on a beautiful tip off a shot by Kyle Kleinendorst (Jr.) Rendle also added an assist. Skrbec capped things off with an unassisted goal. Underwood and Larson again split time in goal. Grand Rapids will have their first test of the regular season Tuesday night in Cloquet.
