Successful first weekend of scrimmages

Grand Rapids, Minn. - The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks kicked off the exhibition season Friday against the defending state champions. Hill-Murray bested Grand Rapids in a competitive 2-1 scrimmage. Patrick Moore (So.) scored the lone goal for Grand Rapids. A.J. Underwood (Sr.) played the first half of the game in goal did not allow anything to get past him and Ryan Larson let in two goals in the back half of the game. Grand Rapids took their play to the next level in their second scrimmage of the weekend. The Thunderhawks shutout Rochester Century 3-0. Underwood and Dom DeGuiseppi (So.) teamed up for the shutout in goal. Tony Palkki (Sr.), Kyle Kleinendorst (Jr.), and Ryan Dumm (Jr.) did the scoring for the Thunderhawks. Grand Rapids came back on Saturday to tie both scrimmages. They played Rochester Century to a 2-2 draw and Forest Lake to a 3-3 tie score. Grand Rapids generated a lot of scoring chances throughout the day. The Thunderhawks look to iron out some roster spots by Tuesday when they will head to Virginia to play the Blue Devils in the IRC Jamboree. The start time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The game will be the third of the night and will consist of two eleven minute stop time periods. Greenway will take on Eveleth at 6:00 p.m. and International Falls will take on Hibbing at 7:00 p.m. All games will be broadcast on KRBT 1340AM out of Virginia.
