Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News

-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the 2008-2009 season.

-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.

-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the 2007-2008 season.

-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Eden Prairie 5, Grand Rapids/Greenway 3 - Girl's State Finals
Game Summary

The Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning were denied their first state title while the Eden Prairie Eagles picked up their second state championship in three years. The Eagles end the three year stretch with a record of 87-2-1. Full summary


Anoka 6, Grand Rapids 0 - Section Semi-Finals
Game Summary

The Anoka Tornadoes blew the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks out of the playoffs with a 6-0 section semi-final win at the DECC. The Tornadoes advanced to play Cloquet in the section final game. Full summary


Grand Rapids/Greenway vs. Eden Prairie - Girl's State Finals (2/23)
Game Preview

The Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning will get their first crack at a state championship on Saturday against the Eden Prairie Eagles. In just their second trip ever to St. Paul the Lightning have advanced to the state title game by defeated Centennial 2-1 in overtime and beating Farmington 5-0. Full preview

Game Summary

The Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning scored just 19 seconds into the game and that would have been all they needed to advance to their first ever state championship game. Dana Gallop took a beautiful pass from Emily Erickson on a two on one and she buried it to make it 1-0 right away. Full summary


Grand Rapids vs. Anoka 2/22 - Section 7AA Semi-Finals
Game Preview

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks will meet the Anoka Tornadoes for the right to play in the section 7AA finals. Grand Rapids is looking to defend to their back to back section 7AA titles. The last time these two teams met in the playoffs was in the 1990 state semi-finals. Grand Rapids was able to escape with a 3-2 overtime victory. Full summary

Game Summary

The Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning came out flying at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday night. The Lightning outshot Section 5AA champion, Centennial, 13-2 in the first period. Cassi Carpenter (Sr.) was able to keep the game scoreless as she made several fantastic saves. Full summary

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks and Greenway Raiders will renew one of the most historic and most intense rivalries in Minnesota high school hockey history for the second time this year. The Grand Rapids Thunderhawk boys hockey team rebounded with a convincing 4-0 victory over the Bemidji Lumberjacks on Tuesday evening at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji.

The Thunderhawks erupted for three goals in the third period and received strong goaltending from senior Trevor Tabaka. Tabaka recorded the first shutout of the season with a 27 save effort for Grand Rapids. Full article

The Hibbing/Chisholm junior forward felt sick in school and had to rest before the game. However, once his skates hit the ice, he was his usual self as he scored the hat trick and added an assist to lead the Bluejackets to a 4-2 Iron Range Conference victory over the Thunderhawks in the Hibbing Memorial Building. Bloomington Jefferson won the battle of special teams vs. Grand Rapids on Saturday. That was the deciding factor in the #6 ranked Jaguars beating the Thunderhawks 3-1. Game Summary

Grand Rapids got off to a hot start and played well enough throughout the night to beat Elk River for the fourth straight time. Tony Palkki and Jack Moore scored first period goals to top Elk River's one goal in the first. Grand Rapids outshot the Elks 11-7 in the period and had the 2-1 lead a third of the way through the game. Full summary

The Eagles even tallied a short handed goal to help the #8 team in the state to a 3-1 win over Grand Rapids in the Edina Holiday Classic. A.J. The Thunderhawks and the #8 Eagles will meet for the third straight season in the Edina Holiday Classic. Eden Prairie has gotten the better of Grand Rapids in each of the first two matchups. Two years ago Eden Prairie won 2-1 and last season, in an FSN game, Eden Prairie defeated a beat up Grand Rapids team 3-0.

The Edina Hornets won possibly their toughest game of the year with a 3-2 win over Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids netted the first goal in a very high flying, entertaining hockey game. Game Preview

Grand Rapids (3-2-1) and #1 Edina (6-0-0) split the season series last year, but Grand Rapids won the more important game. Edina beat Rapids 4-3 in their holiday tournament, but the Thunderhawks beat the Hornets 3-1 in the state semi-finals. Edina is undefeated and ranked tied for first in the state with Roseau. Thunderhawks earn first victory

In a 33-second span at the end of the second period, the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks turned a 1-1 tie into a late-game rout as the T‘hawks ran away with their first win of the season, beating the Virginia Blue Devils 5-2 Tuesday night.

With 1:03 left in the second period Grant Prokop beat Virginia goalie Will Lustig to take a 2-1 advantage; and the Blue Devils barely had time to recover before Sam Sparen took the puck up the ice and beat Lustig with 30 ticks left in the period. Full Mesabi Daily Tribune Article

Grand Rapids stormed out of the gates outshooting Forest Lake 21-7 in the first period. Forest Lake goaltender was the difference. He stopped 20/21 in the first period and sent his team to the locker room tied at one. Robb Roy and Corey Radke were the first period goal scorers. It was your typical Section 7AA matchup when Grand Rapids and Cloquet-Esko-Carlton squared off for the first time on Tuesday evening at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids.

Late heroics by the Thunderhawks provided the crowd with free hockey as the Thunderhawks and Lumberjacks skated to an overtime 2-2 tie. Full Herald Review Article

Cloquet came out flying in the first period and outshot Grand Rapids 17-6 in the opening frame. Trevor Tabaka was simply the difference in the first period. He kicked out 16 of 17 to keep it at 1-0 after one period. Grand Rapids was the team that came out flying in the second period, outshooting Cloquet 12-4 in the period. Full recap

Game Preview

Grand Rapids will host Cloquet in the 2007-2008 season opener. Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Grand Rapids and Cloquet will play a rematch of the past two section final games. Grand Rapids won in 2006 by a 5-3 score and in 2007 they won again by a 3-1 margin. Over the past two seasons Grand Rapids is 5-1 vs. Cloquet.
