Grand Rapids vs. Hermantown
IRA Civic Center, Grand Rapids, MN-7:30 p.m.
1/8/2008
Game Preview:
The defending Class A State Champions will invade
the IRA Civic Center on Tuesday night. #11 Hermantown did not lose a single game
last season on their way to their first state title. After downing Duluth
Marshall in the championship game, they finished the season 29-0-2. The Hawks
did lose many of their top players from last season. Chad Huttle (52 points last
year), a senior last year, is now playing in the WCHA for the UMD Bulldogs. Ryan
Schmidt (62 points last season) has also graduated and moved on. Leading scorer
from last year, Drew LeBlanc (85 points last season) decided to forgo his senior
year and play in the USHL. The Hawks also lost starting goalie Nathan Hardy to
graduation. The top scorer that returns for Hermantown is Joey Krause. He has 16
points this season. That 16 points is second on the team to his brother, Adam
Krause who has 18 points. Hermantown (8-6-0) has relied on Ben Tessier in goal
this season. He has played every period except for one this season. Grand Rapids
(5-5-1) plays Hermantown at all levels in the youth program. The two teams will
be fairly familiar with each other. Robb Roy still leads Grand Rapids in scoring
with 21 points. A.J. Underwood has seen a majority of the playing time between
the pipes for Rapids. This has all the makings of a great Lake Superior
Conference-Iron Range Conference clash.
Last meeting:
Grand Rapids 8, Hermantown 0 (February 21, 1985 Section 7 Playoffs)
Notes: No current Grand Rapids players
have faced Hermantown at the varsity level.

Official game time: 1 hour and 57 minutes
The defending Class A state champions got off to a great start on the road vs.
Grand Rapids. Koby Wargin netted his fifth goal of the year just over five
minutes into the first to give Hermantown the 1-0 lead. It looked as though the
Hawks would go into the locker room with the lead, but things changed fast.
Corey Kosak found the back of the net for the third time this year with one
second left in the first period to tie the game. Sam Sparen and Sam Rendle were
given assists on the power play goal. Jack Moore started his big night in the
second period. He fed Grant Prokop on the back door and Prokop buried the puck.
It was Grant's seventh goal of the year and John Skrbec picked up the second
assist. Moore scored the next goal for the Thunderhawks to make it 3-1. Sam
Sparen would score the final goal of the second period on the power play. Sparen
made a beautiful tip on a shot from Sam Rendle for the goal. The goal was
Sparen's third of the year. Jack Moore would complete his huge night in the
third period. Moore's second goal was assisted by Corey Kosak and Eric Bishop.
For Moore, it was his fourth and fifth goals of the season. Grand Rapids was 2/7
on the power play in the game while Hermantown was 0/2. Kyle Figgins was
fantastic in goal and improved to 3-0 on the season by stopping 27 of 28 shots.
Adam Tessier stopped 38 of 43 shots in the game but fell to 8-7 on the season.
The Thunderhawks improve to 2-2-1 at home this season. Grand Rapids as a team
pulls over the .500 mark at 6-5-1 and Hermantown drops to 8-7-0 on the season.
