Grand Rapids @ Greenway
Hodgins-Berardo Arena, Coleraine, MN
12/7/2007
Game Preview:
Grand Rapids and Greenway will renew one of the
fiercest rivalries in Minnesota High School hockey. The Thunderhawks have beaten
the Raiders six straight times, winning the games by a combined score of 51-12.
The last time Greenway was able to salvage a game in this series was on January
1st, 2004 when Greenway stifled Grand Rapids 4-2 behind the outstanding
goaltending performance of Aaron Damjanovich. Greenway won their first game of
the 2007-2008 campaign at home over Hastings, but has since dropped three
straight. Grand Rapids has tied, lost, and won in their first three games this
year. No matter what the talent level is on either side, the Rapids-Greenway
games are typically outstanding. The Raiders will look to senior forward Al
Guyer (3g, 3a, 6p) to help lead them in this game. Sophomore defenseman Garret Ohrn (2g, 3a, 5p) will also need to be outstanding to help Greenway win this
game. Grand Rapids will look to Robb Roy (1g, 6a, 7p), Sam Sparen (1g, 5a, 6p)
and a host of other impact players for Rapids. The big question in this game is
going to be the goaltending. Neither team has a set goaltender at this point. A
hot goalie from either side could prove to be the difference in this one. The
x-factor in this game will be the crowd. If the Thunderhawks can take the crowd
out of it with an early goal like they did last season, they will have a better
shot at winning. However, if Greenway can net that first goal and get the crowd
behind them, we could see a wild hockey game.

Official game time: 1 hour, 56 minutes
Grand Rapids jumped out of the gates and took the early 1-0 lead when Jack Moore
put home a rebound at the 1:36 mark of the first period. Nick Serratore was
credited with the lone assist on the goal. That would be the only scoring in a
period where Grand Rapids outshot Greenway 17-2. The second period was full of
scoring. Greenway would tie the game early in the first and then take the lead
shortly thereafter. Jeremy Sobtzak and Adam Mendoza scored the early second
period goals for the Raiders. Robb Roy would tie it up just moments later and
just moments after that Tim Frings would take the lead back for Greenway. Robb
Roy answered back less than a minute after that with his second of the game and
third of the season. Sam Rendle would give Grand Rapids their second lead of the
game when he picked off a pass and went coast to coast. He proceeded to skate in
behind the Raider goal and wheel and shoot from near the faceoff dot. Rendle's
missile went over Guyer's glove and under the crossbar. The lead didn't last
long. Matt Estey tied the game just over a minute and a half later. Tony Palkki
added a nifty back hand, power play goal with under a minute left in the second
period to give Grand Rapids a 5-4 lead after two. The power play goal was the
Thunderhawk's second of the night. Grand Prokop scored the eventual game winning
goal with 5:37 remaining in the game. Alex Guyer made it close when he scored on
a breakaway with just over a minute and a half to go. Greenway pulled Trevor
Guyer for an extra skater, but it was an unsuccessful attempt and Grand Rapids
headed west on highway 169 with the 6-5 victory. Grand Rapids was 2/8 on the
power play and they killed all three attempts for Greenway. The
Thunderhawk-Raider rivalry was renewed in a great way.
