Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News

-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the 2008-2009 season.

-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.

-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the 2007-2008 season.

-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Game Preview:
The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks and Greenway Raiders will renew one of the most historic and most intense rivalries in Minnesota high school hockey history for the second time this year. In the first meeting, Grand Rapids picked up their seventh straight win over Greenway by winning 6-5 at Hodgins-Berrardo Arena in Coleraine. Trevor Tabaka will make his first career start vs. Greenway. Tabaka is 2-1-1 on the season with a .936 save % and a 1.67 GAA. It's anyone's guess who will be in goal for the Raiders. Trevor Guyer played in the first meeting and was fantastic. He stopped 36 Thunderhawk shots, but was the tough luck loser in the 6-5 loss. Robby Roy still leads the way for Grand Rapids in points. Sam Sparen is sitting in the number two spot and leads the team in power play goals. Jack Moore has slid into the number three spot on the team in points with his long hot streak he has been on. The Raiders will look to senior leader Alex Guyer to help pull off the upset. Guyer leads both teams in points in this game with 27. Matt Estey is second in points for the Raiders with 19 and Cody Strom sits in third with 17 points. The 6-11 Greenway squad has won three of it's last five games outscoring opponents 32-17 in the five games. Grand Rapids (9-7-1) has won three of their last five also. In those five games they have out scored their opponents 18-11. Expect to see a packed and wild IRA Civic Center on Thursday night.

Notes: Robb Roy was the #1 star in the first meeting of the two teams back in December. Grand Rapids has outshot opponents on average 32.28-28.88 this season. In the first meeting with Greenway, Grand Rapids outshot the Raiders 42-17. The Thunderhawks have scored an average of 3.76 goals per game while only allowing 2.65. Grand Rapids is 3-3-1 at home this year and 4-1 vs. class A teams.

Special Teams: Grand Rapids was 2/8 (25%) on the power play in their first meeting with Greenway. Robb Roy and Tony Palkki scored the power play goals in that game. On the season, the Grand Rapids power play is 16/82 (19.51%). Sam Sparen leads the way with four power play goals. The Grand Rapids penalty kill was a perfect 3/3 in Coleraine in December. The penalty kill has been heating up and is now 66/78 (84.62%) on the season. Nate Dumm has scored the only short handed goal for the Thunderhawks.

Grand Rapids was able to defeat their biggest rival for the second time this season. Jack Moore continued his hot streak and put the Greenway Raiders in a 1-0 hole just 48 seconds into the game. Moore's ninth goal of the year was assisted by Grant Prokop and John Skrbec. Robby Roy finally broke out of his goal scoring slump just over two minutes later when he buried the puck after a nice feed from Sam Rendle on the power play. Garret Ohrn was able to cut the lead in half when he beat Trevor Tabaka on the power play. Matt Estey started the play and got the puck over to Alex Guyer. Guyer was able to slide the puck to Ohrn who put it in the net. Nate Dumm scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal late in the first period to make it 3-1 at the intermission. For Dumm, it was his third goal in the last two games and his second short handed goal of the year. J.R. Mackey scored his sixth girl of the year just over five minutes into the second. The two defensemen on the ice, Sam Rendle and Corey Kosak, assisted the goal. One of those defensemen, Corey Kosak, was able to score on the power play just under two minutes later. Robby Roy was credited with the lone assist on the goal. Adam Mendoza scored the final goal of the period for Greenway. Garret Ohrn and Nick Adams assisted on the goal that made the score 5-2 after two periods. Nick Adama and Adam Mendoza were able to create another goal early in the third. Adams got the puck past Tabaka on the power play with Mendoza getting the lone assist. Robb Roy scored his second power play goal (fifth power play goal and eight goal of the year) just moments later to answer. Sam Rendle and Tony Palkki gained assists on the goal. Tony Palkki finished off the scoring for Grand Rapids on the power play midway through the third period. Palkki's 11th goal of the year was assisted by Sam Rendle and Corey Kosak. Sam Rendle led the way for Grand Rapids with four assists. Corey Kosak and Robb Roy each had three points in the game. Kosak had a goal and two assists while Roy had two goals and an assist. Garret Ohrn, Adam Mendoza, and Nick Adams all has a goal and an assist for Greenway. Trevor Tabaka stopped 19 shots for Grand Rapids to improve to 3-1-1 on the year. Trevor Guyer and Erikur Arnason teamed up for 31 saves in the loss. Grand Rapids was an impressive 4/8 on the power play in the game. Greenway was 2/6 on the power play, but allowed a short handed goal. The Thunderhawks improve their win streak to eight games over Greenway with the win. Grand Rapids improves to 10-7-1 on the season while Greenway falls to 6-12.
