Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News

-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the 2008-2009 season.

-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.

-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the 2007-2008 season.

-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Game Preview:
Grand Rapids and Forest Lake will take to the ice for the second straight year in the section 7AA semi-finals. The Thunderhawks were able to defeat Forest Lake 5-1 and eventually advance to the state championship game. The Rangers nipped Grand Rapids at the IRA Civic Center earlier this season. Forest Lake was outshot drastically, but goaltender Paul Moberg was able to make 48 saves and steal the game. Forest Lake took the game 4-3 in overtime. On that day, Trevor Tabaka made the start in goal and made 20 saves in the loss. A.J. Underwood will be the man in goal for the Thunderhawks on Tuesday. The Thunderhawks have not yet finalized their playoff roster. The coaches are still waiting to determine the health of certain players. Forest Lake will be looking to upset Grand Rapids in Grand Rapids for the second time this year. The Thunderhawks will be looking to continue their great string of postseason play. Grand Rapids is 6-0 in section 7AA playoffs the last two years.

Notes: Grand Rapids is 10-2 in the playoffs the last two seasons. Forest Lake has not advanced to the section 7AA semi-finals in the last two seasons.

Special Teams: The Thunderhawk power play finished the regular season at 19.49% (23/118). The penalty kill finished up at 91/109 (83.49%). Robb Roy and Sam Sparen led the way on the power play with 5 goals each. Nate Dumm led the way on the penalty kill with 2 shorthanded goals. Robb Roy has netted the only empty net goal this season.

Grand Rapids was able to avenge their loss in their second game of the regular season in a big way against Forest Lake. The Thunderhawks ended the Rangers season with a 4-2 win on Tuesday. Corey Kosak was able to wrap his badly injured knee enough to play a few shifts in the game. Sam Rendle left the ice for good early in the game with a severe shoulder injury after being hit on a questionable play. Things did not look good for Grand Rapids, but the top line for the Thunderhawks stole the show. Sam Rendle was able to score before he left the game. His goal came with just forty seconds left in the first period and was assisted by Robb Roy and Sam Sparen. The Thunderhawks outshot the Rangers 25-12 in the first, but Paul Moberg kept it a 1-0 game. Chaz Hartshorn was able to beat A.J. Underwood with 4:37 remaining in the second period to tie the game at one. Just over two minutes later John Skrbec gave Grand Rapids the lead again. Sam Sparen had the lone assist on the goal. Sam Sparen gave Grand Rapids the two goal lead just under four minutes into the third period. Sparen's sixth power play goal of the season and first of the post season was assisted by Robb Roy and John Skrbec. Robb Roy scored his sixth power play goal of the season and his first of the post season just minutes later. Sam Sparen and Robb Roy added the assists as the first line continued to dominate play. Matt Wethammer scored Forest Lake's last goal of the year with just under seven minutes to go. A.J. Underwood made 30 saves in the 4-2 win for Grand Rapids. Paul Moberg kicked out an even 50 shots in the loss for Forest Lake. Grand Rapids will play Anoka at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the DECC in Duluth.
