Grand Rapids vs. Forest Lake

Game Preview:
The Thunderhawks (0-0-1) will do battle with the Forest Lake Rangers (1-0-0) Friday night in Grand Rapids. In the last two seasons Grand Rapids is 3-0 vs. Forest Lake. The Rangers won their season opener 4-1 over Cambridge-Isanti. Grand Rapids tied Cloquet in their season opener on Tuesday night, 2-2. Grand Rapids has essentially dominated the all team series between these two teams. Forest Lake will have to hope for a big game from junior goaltender Paul Moberg. Last season, in two games against Grand Rapids, Moberg had a 4.50 GAA and a .886 save %. Grand Rapids won both matchups last season. Forest Lake is 1-0-0 vs. section 7AA teams while Grand Rapids is 0-0-1.

Last meeting: Grand Rapids 5, Forest Lake 1 (2/20/07-Section 7AA quarterfinals)


Notes: In the playoff game vs. Forest Lake last year, Robb Roy tallied 3 assists. Jack Moore is the only player on the roster to score against the Rangers. The Thunderhawks have 8 returning points against Forest Lake. Robb Roy-3 assists, Sam Sparen-2 assists, Sam Rendle-2 assists, and Jack Moore-1 goal.

Special Teams: Grand Rapids is 1/6 on the power play and 5/6 on the penalty kill this season.

Grand Rapids stormed out of the gates outshooting Forest Lake 21-7 in the first period. Forest Lake goaltender was the difference. Paul Moberg stopped 20/21 in the first period and sent his team to the locker room tied at one. Robb Roy and Corey Radke were the first period goal scorers. In the second period, each team also scored a single goal. Kyle Jensen scored shorthanded early in the period. Just over five minutes later, Kyle Kleinendorst netted his first career goal with assists going to Grant Prokop and Sam Sparen. Grand Rapids dominated the shot column again in the third period, outshooting the Rangers 18-9 in the final regulation frame. Again, each team scored one goal in the period. Kyle Morgan gave Forest Lake a 3-2 lead just five minutes into the third. However, sophomore Kyle Kleinendorst answered with his second goal of this night and his second career goal. Kyle scored with an assist to Roy with just 3:35 remaining in the third. The Rangers would be the team to walk away with the big win on Friday night. Jake Kogler scored on Forest Lake's first shot of overtime to win the game 4-3 for the Rangers. Grand Rapids was 1/6 on the power play in the game. They are now 2/12 (17%) on the season. They were 4/4 on the penalty kill, however. That brings their season total up to 9/10 (90%). Grand Rapids (0-1-1) will take to the road Tuesday and battle Iron Range Conference foe, Virginia.
