Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News

-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the 2008-2009 season.

-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.

-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the 2007-2008 season.

-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Game Preview:
Grand Rapids has won at least a share of the Iron Range Conference each of the last two seasons. If they are going to keep that trend going they will need to get past Eveleth on Thursday. The 10-8-1 Grand Rapids Thunderhawks will travel to take on the 5-15 Eveleth-Gilbert/Mesabi East Golden Bears at the historic Eveleth Hippodrome. The Thunderhawks have nine players in double digits in points. Robb Roy leads the way with 26 points and Sam Rendle isn't far behind with 20. The Golden Bears have five players in double digits in points this season. Jacob Cogger leads the way with 16 points and Ben Delich is right behind him with 15 points. Freshman Jesse Schilling has seen a majority of the playing time in goal for Eveleth. A.J. Underwood has played the most minutes in goal for Grand Rapids, but Trevor Tabaka has played his share of games also. This is a four point game as far as Iron Range Conference points are concerned.

Last meeting: Grand Rapids 10, Eveleth 0 (2/1/2007 @ Grand Rapids) The Thunderhawks outshot the Golden Bears 54-13 and Jason Makinen scored three times for Grand Rapids in the win. Patrick White scored twice for the Thunderhawks and Tim How and Reidar Jensen combined to stop all 13 shots.

Notes: After 19 games last year the Thunderhawks had a record of 12-5-2. Sam Sparen has two career goals against Eveleth while Robb Roy and Nick Serratore each have two career assists against the Golden Bears. Tony Palkki has a goal and Sam Rendle has an assist vs. Eveleth.

Special Teams: Grand Rapids is 20/95 (21.05%) on the season. Sam Sparen leads the way with 5 power play goals. The penalty kill is 72/88 (81.82%) on the season.

Game Summary:

Grand Rapids took advantage of Eveleth and had their biggest game of the year cruising to a 9-1 Iron Range Conference win in Eveleth. On the same night, Hibbing defeated International Falls. That means if Grand Rapids wins their next two games against Hibbing and International Falls, they will be crowned Iron Range Conference Champions. Sam Sparen kicked off his four point night by assisting Robb Roy's first period goal to put Grand Rapids up 1-0 after one. John Skrbec was also credited with an assist on the Roy goal. Grand Rapids outshot Eveleth 20-4 in the first. The Thunderhawks buzzed in the second period and tossed 30 shots on Eveleth freshman goaltender Jesse Schilling. Schilling batted out all but three. Sam Sparen continued his big night by scoring the first goal of the period with an assist by Robb Roy. Sparen scored again less than a minute later, this time on the power play to give Grand Rapids the 3-0 advantage. Sparen's sixth power play goal of the year was assisted by Sam Rendle and Eric Bishop. Billy Shaw scored the fourth goal of the game for Grand Rapids. Duston Schulte and Sam Sparen assisted on the goal. For Sparen, the assist gives him 50 points in his career. Grand Rapids only led 4-0 after two despite outshooting Eveleth 50-7 in the first two frames. Grant Prokop scored the first of five Grand Rapids goals in the third period. Jack Moore and Nate Dumm assisted on Prokop's eighth goal of the year. Billy Shaw would add his second of the game and third of the season with an assist to J.R. Mackey to make it 6-0 Grand Rapids. Eveleth ended the Thunderhawks run with their only goal of the game when Alex Loe snuck one past Trevor Tabaka. Eric Bishop answered back just twenty-four seconds later with his first career goal for Grand Rapids. John Skrbec added his second assist of the night. A.J. Merritt would score his first career goal next. Sam Rendle and Jack Moore each added their second assist of the game. For Merritt, it was not only the first goal of his career but it came in the first game he suited for. Matt Jerulle scored his second goal of the year with just twenty seconds remaining. Nick Serratore assisted on the power play goal. Grand Rapids was 1/8 on the power play in the game. They held the Eveleth power play in check all night and Grand Rapids was 5/5 on the penalty kill. Jesse Schilling made 56 saves in the losing effort for Eveleth. Trevor Tabaka was forced to make just ten stops for his fourth win of the season.
