Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News

-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the 2008-2009 season.

-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.

-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.

-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the 2007-2008 season.

-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Game Preview:
The Thunderhawks and the #8 Eagles will meet for the third straight season in the Edina Holiday Classic. Eden Prairie has gotten the better of Grand Rapids in each of the first two matchups. Two years ago Eden Prairie won 2-1 and last season, in an FSN game, Eden Prairie defeated a beat up Grand Rapids team 3-0. Dave Meyer leads the Eagles with 8 goals on the season. Joe McQuillan has tallied two goals and ten assists on the season for the Eagles. Defensive star Nick Leddy has seven points on the season. Grand Rapids will look to the top line of Robb Roy, Sam Sparen, and John Skrbec to have a big game against the Eagles. Eden Prairie defeated Elk River 6-2 in game one of the Edina Holiday Classic while Grand Rapids fell to Edina by a 3-2 score. This game will have a live web stream at www.myfoxhockey.com.

Last meeting:
Eden Prairie 3, Grand Rapids 0 (12/21/2007-Edina Classic) Eden Prairie controlled most of the FSN Hockey Night battle and cruised to a 3-0 win. Grand Rapids played without Patrick White, Kyle Welliver, and Brett Cone. The Eagles scored one goal in each period including a shorthanded empty netter with six seconds left in the third.

Notes: Grand Rapids does not return a single career point in games vs. Eden Prairie.  

Special Teams: Grand Rapids has scored a power play goal in every game this season and they have been scoring at a 27.59% (8/29) clip. The penalty kill took a little bit of a shot in the Edina game, but still sits at 28/33 (84.85%)

Eden Prairie was the first team this season to hold Grand Rapids scoreless on the power play. The Eagles even tallied a short handed goal to help the #8 team in the state to a 3-1 win over Grand Rapids in the Edina Holiday Classic. A.J. Underwood was fantastic in goal yet again for Grand Rapids, but his 30 saves wasn't enough. Grand Rapids scored the first goal just under seven minutes into the contest when Grant Prokop scored an unassisted goal. Eden Prairie answered back late in the period to even the contest at 1-1. Neither team scores in the second period. Eden Prairie outshot Rapids 12-7 in the middle frame thanks to three power plays. Tom Strand and Nick Leddy tallied in the third period for the Eagles and they pulled away in the third period. Grand Rapids pulled the goalie for the final minute, but could not score. Cam Stypula stopped 19/20 to lead Eden Prairie to its second win in as many nights in the Edina Holiday Classic. Grand Rapids will face section 7AA foe Elk River tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in the final game of the Holiday Classic. Eden Prairie will battle #1 Edina (8-0-0) at 8:30 p.m. to round out tournament play.
