Grand Rapids @ Edina (Edina Holiday Classic)
Braemar Arena, Edina, MN-8:30 p.m.
12/19/2007

Game Preview:
Grand Rapids (3-2-1) and #1 Edina (6-0-0) split the season series last year, but Grand Rapids won the more important game. Edina beat Rapids 4-3 in their holiday tournament, but the Thunderhawks beat the Hornets 3-1 in the state semi-finals. Edina is undefeated and ranked tied for first in the state with Roseau. The Hornets have an outstanding core of young players such as Anders Lee, Marshal Everson, Connor Gaarder, Matt Leer, and more. Grand Rapids will again look to Robb Roy, Sam Sparen, and Tony Palkki to shoulder the load against Edina. Grand Rapids is 3-0-0 in road games this season compared to 0-2-1 at home. The goaltending situation has yet to be solved for the Thunderhawks, but whether Kyle Figgins, Trevor Tabaka, or A.J. Underwood play, they will have to be on the top of their game for Grand Rapids to pull off the upset. Of course, Edina will be seeking revenge after the Thunderhawks knocked off the #1 seeded Hornets in last years state tournament. Expect a very physical game played in front of a rowdy crowd. This game will have a live web stream at www.myfoxhockey.com.

Last meeting:
Grand Rapids 3, Edina 1 (3/8/2007-State Semi-Finals). Patrick White scored the first two goals and Zach Morse assisted on both of them and that would be all Reidar Jensen needed for Grand Rapids. Brett Cone would add a beautiful goal late in the 3rd period when he fired a shot from a bad angle into the upper corner. Edina would get a goal late from Connor Gaarder, but it wasn't enough. Reidar Jensen made 28 saves to help lead Grand Rapids to the upset over the #1 seeded Edina Hornets.

Notes: Sam Rendle is the only Thunderhawk that returns a point in games against Edina. He had an assist in the 4-3 loss at Braemar Arena last season.

Special Teams: The Grand Rapids power play is 7/33 (21.21%) this season and has tallied at least one goal in every game. The penalty kill is 26/29 (89.66%) on the season.

The Edina Hornets won possibly their toughest game of the year with a 3-2 win over Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids netted the first goal in a very high flying, entertaining hockey game. Robb Roy shoved in a rebound from a Corey Kosak shot with just ten seconds remaining in the first period. It was the eighth power play goal of the year for Grand Rapids and Matt Jerulle tallied his first career point by adding the second assist. Edina answered back in the second period by scoring two special teams goals of their own. Marshall Everson would score a short handed goal and a power play goal in the frame. The Hornets headed to the third period with a 2-1 lead. Joe Gleason would score the eventual game winning goal for Edina after a nifty passing play set him up back door. Connor Gaarder pushed the puck across for former St. Thomas Academy standout Anders Lee. Lee made a beautiful pass to Gleason back door and Gleason made it 3-1. Grand Rapids would make it interesting in the game's final minutes. Nate Dumm and Shane Greniger broke in on a two on one and Dumm made a great pass to Greniger who beat Caschetta to make it 3-2. Dumm's assist was his first career point. Grand Rapids pulled A.J. Underwood with 34 seconds left, but could not tally the game tying goal. Underwood was fantastic in goal for Grand Rapids. He stopped 31/34 Edina shots and many of them were outstanding saves. Derrick Caschetta beats Grand Rapids for the second straight year in the Edina Classic by stopping 19/21. Grand Rapids scored on the power play for the seventh straight game. Grand Rapids falls to 3-3-1 on the year and will take on Eden Prairie at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. Edina improves to 7-0 on the season and will battle Elk River at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
