Grand Rapids Hockey Offseason News
-Sam Rendle, Tony Palkki, and John Skrbec have been named captains for the
2008-2009 season.
-J.R. Mackey has been awarded the 2007-2008 Grand Rapids Hobey Baker Award.
-Corey Kosak was named Player's Choice team MVP for the 2007-2008 season.
-Sam Sparen was named Player's Choice team Most Determined Player for the
2007-2008 season.
-Pat Rendle has been named Grand Rapids High School Athletic Director as Wayne
Pender is set to resign at the end of the school year.

Game Preview:
Grand Rapids will host Cloquet in the 2007-2008 season
opener. Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Grand Rapids and Cloquet will play a rematch
of the past two section final games. Grand Rapids won in 2006 by a 5-3 score and
in 2007 they won again by a 3-1 margin. Over the past two seasons Grand Rapids
is 5-1 vs. Cloquet. The Thunderhawks beat the Lumberjacks 4-3 in overtime in
Grand Rapids two years ago. Last season, Cloquet came into Grand Rapids 13-0 and
ranked #2 in the state. Grand Rapids went on to win the game 2-0. The stars like
Patrick White, Joe Stejskal, Reidar Jensen, Tyler Johnson, and Reid Ellingson
may be gone, but the rivalry is not. Cloquet is already 1-0 on the season. They
traveled to Virginia and rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win 7-5 on the road.
Cloquet will look to Justin Jokinen and David Brown to carry the load on
Tuesday. Grand Rapids will look to their experience. Multiple Thunderhawks have
played in two state tournaments. Be sure to check in Tuesday while the game is
going for score updates.

Notes: Last season Sam Rendle and Corey
Kosak each had one assist against Cloquet. January 14th, 2006, Robb Roy scored a
goal in Rapids' 3-1 win @ Cloquet. Robb would score again in the section final
that season. Rapids returns only 4 career points in games vs. Cloquet.

Game Summary:
Official start time: 7:37 p.m.
Official end time: 9:41 p.m.
Official game time: 2 hours and 4 minutes
Cloquet came out flying in the first period and outshot Grand Rapids 17-6 in the
opening frame. Trevor Tabaka was simply the difference in the first period. He
kicked out 16 of 17 to keep it at 1-0 after one period. Grand Rapids was the
team that came out flying in the second period, outshooting Cloquet 12-4 in the
period. It took until late in the period to tie it up. Tony Palkki would finally
get the Thunderhawks on the board on the power play. Cloquet scored just over a
minute into the third period, setting up the drama that would occur nearly 16
minutes later. With 26 seconds left, Grand Rapids called timeout and pulled the
goaltender. Tony Palkki would again provide the spark for Rapids. His goal with
just one second left sent the game into overtime. Neither team scored in the
extra frame. After 58 minutes of hockey, no winner was determined. It was a
wonderful way to start the season.
