The Anoka Tornadoes picked up a huge win Saturday at the IRA Civic Center in Grand Rapids. Anoka used two power play goals in the first period and an empty net goal in the third period to slip past Grand Rapids 3-0. It was the first time the Thunderhawks were shutout since December 21st, 2006 vs. Eden Prairie at the Edina Classic. Rapids also lost that game 3-0 with an empty net goal. The top line for Anoka was very tough and scored all three goals in the big section 7AA regular season meeting. The Thunderhawks had a large territorial advantage in the game, but Anoka netminder J.D. Wells was equal to every task the Thunderhawks gave him. Wells stopped 35 shots in the shutout win for the Tornadoes. Grand Rapids outshot Anoka 10-8 in the first period, but trailed 2-0 after one. The Anoka power play was able to score twice in the first. In the second period, Grand Rapids outshot Anoka 14-1 but was unable to score. Grand Rapids continued outshooting Anoka in the third. Third period shots were 11-7 in favor of Grand Rapids. The Thunderhawks outshot Anoka 35-16 but still dropped the game 3-0. Anoka now has a leg up on Grand Rapids in the section 7AA seeding meeting.
